Volume 3 covers the period between the spring of 1843 and August 1844 before their close collaboration between Marx and Engels began. These writings represent the transition of Marx and Engels from idealism to materialism and the elaboration of a scientific basis of a new, revolutionary-proletarian world outlook. The first part of this volume consists of works by Marx, including his manuscript
Contribution to the Critique of Hegel's Philosophy of Law. The
Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844 published here represent Marx's first attempt to synthesise the new philosophical, economic and historical-political ideas. The second part contains works by Engels: "Letters from London", "Outlines of a Critique of Political Economy", in which for the first time economic phenomena were examined from the viewpoint of communist theory, and his series of articles entitled "The Condition of England".
