Volume 46 contains the correspondence between Marx and Engels from January 1880 to March 1883. In those last few years of Marx's life, Engels bore the main burden of corresponding with working-class leaders all over the world. Cumulatively, the letters give a good idea of how much Marx, and especially Engels, assisted Social-Demogratic parties with their programme documents and their strategy and tactics, particularly the Socialist Workers' Party of Germany, the largest working-class party of the time. Their letters also reflect the part they played in shaping the French Workers' Party, and give an idea of how closely Marx and Engels followed developments and changes in the labour movement in Britain and Ireland.
