Volume 47 contains Engels' letters from April 1883 to December 1886, the period immediately following Marx's death (in March 1883). More than half the letters have not been published in English before. Engels who, with Eleanor Marx, was Marx's 'literary executor', concentrated above all on preparing Marx's unfinished second and third volumes of Capital and the third German edition of the first volume for the press.
